US consumers buying More Android phones than iPhones, BlackBerrys

The smartphone market is pretty competitive, which can make choosing a phone challenging for consumers who just want a clear answer on which of these pricey devices they should buy.

Right now, the three leading types of smartphones are running nearly neck-and-neck in the U.S., although Google's Android models may be inching ahead.

New data from Nielsen shows that slightly more U.S. consumers are buying Android phones than any other type of smartphone. Currently Android holds 29% of the US smartphone market; while the iPhone and BlackBerry hold 27% each.

But wait: Android is an operating system, and there's considerable diversity among the manufacturers, models, features, and general user experience available in that category.

Under the "Android" label you'll find everything from the high-end Motorola Droid Pro and the HTC Evo 4G to the lower-tech Samsung Intercept. Also, Android system updates get rolled out unevenly to various Android devices.

In terms of manufacturers, Nielsen notes: "RIM and Apple are the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems.

"HTC follows with 12% of consumer smartphone owners having an HTC Android device and 7% owning an HTC device running a Microsoft OS. Ten percent of consumer smartphone owners had a Motorola Android device and one percent owned a Motorola device running a Microsoft OS."

How To Enable Multitouch Gestures On iPhone 4 Running iOS 4.3 GM

The just released iOS 4.3 GM brings some extra perks to iPad users, namely: Multitouch Gestures. These gestures can be used to do variety of tasks such as three finger app switching, going back to the homescreen by simple pinching out on the app you’re running using your fingers etc. Want all this goodness on your iPhone 4? Just follow the guide and you’ll have multitouch gestures up and running in no time.

Step 1: Jailbreak iOS 4.3 GM running on your iPhone 4, you can follow the guide posted here using PwnageTool 4.2.

Step 2: Once you’re jailbroken, launch Cydia and install OpenSSH.

Step 3: Now you’re going to SSH into your device (by using clients such as Cyberduck for Mac or WinSCP for Windows), and then navigate to the following directory: System>Library>CoreServices>SpringBoard.app>N90.plist

Step 4: Using a plist editor such as TextWrangler, edit the N90.plist file.

Step 5: Add a Boolean statement “multitasking-gestures” and set its value to “True”.

Step 6: Save everything you’ve edited, restart the Springboard.

Step 7: That’s it, you’re all done! You should now see the Multitouch Gestures option in the Settings.app file on your iPhone 4. Just tap to turn it on.

In news that will confuse the heck out of any of her fans following her story, Céline Dion announced that she is not actually pregnant. This is despite her doctor announcing the singer was expecting, back in August. News stating that the IVF process had been successful was rather premature.
Dion, 41, had IVF treatment to try to conceive a child with 67-year-old husband René Angélil. However, the embryos transferred in August and October were unsuccessful. The couple declared they will keep trying for a second child.

Two things: One, the PC release of Modern Warfare 2 has been delayed by a couple of weeks until November 24, 2009. The console versions are still on track of a November 10, 2009 release.

Second, Hollywood is apparently in need of an all-American, shoot-’em-up, special effects nightmare of a movie because Activision has trademarked Call of Duty for movie use.

There have been a few rumors about a Call of Duty movie in the past but this is the first bit of credible evidence. Apparently Activision filed for a trademark that covers the Call of Duty name “Pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation.” Not only that, Gamasutra points out that the creative strategist behind Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Robert Bowling, recently twittered that he was in Paris “Talking game films” with the drector of the Hitman film aduptation, Xavier Gens.

You have to imagine that Activision would want to tap the Call of Duty cash cow. The franchise has been responsible for some of the very best FPS games of the decade. It’s too bad that Hollywood will likely out a G.I. Joe-ish, PG-13 movie aimed at 16- to 24-year old boys and slap the Call of Duty name on it.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - It's game over for some police officers who played video games while they raided a convicted drug dealer's home in central Florida.

Surveillance video obtained by WFLA in Tampa caught the officers playing a Nintendo Wii bowling game, with one furiously jumping up and down in celebration. Officials say some of the officers could be disciplined.

Officers with the anti-drug task force had just stormed into the home of the convicted drug dealer, who was already in custody.

One Polk County sheriff's detective can be seen taking several breaks from cataloging evidence so she can bowl frames.

The officers did not know a video camera had been set up in the house before the March raid.

RPG hit Fallout 3 will be a year old in October and now the developer/publisher has revealed that their previously announced Game of the Year edition of the game will ship to stores for the PC on October 13.

Serena Williams' U.S. Open title defense ended in bizarre, ugly fashion Saturday night, when she was penalized a point on match point after yelling and shaking her racket in the direction of an official who called a foot fault.

Williams lost to unseeded, unranked Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 in a taut semifinal.

With Williams serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, she faulted on her first serve. On the second serve, a line judge called a foot fault, making it a double-fault. That made the score 15-40, putting Clijsters one point from victory.

Williams went over and shouted at the line judge, who walked over and reported it to the chair umpire. That led to the chair umpire awarding a penalty point to Clijsters, ending the match.

Williams already had been given a code violation warning when she broke her racket after losing the first set.

"She was called for a foot fault, and a point later, she said something to a line umpire, and it was reported to the chair, and that resulted in a point penalty," tournament referee Brian Earley explained. "And it just happened that point penalty was match point. It was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct."

In the final, 2005 champion Clijsters will play No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki, who beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-3.

A Romanian luxury car enthusiast has named his daughter “SLK” after the Mercedes model.

The man, from Chisinau Cris in Arad county, reportedly surprised staff at the registry office with the name.

Ica Mladin, the head of the local registry office, said: “This man walked into the office and said he wanted a birth certificate on the name ‘SLK Caldarar’.

“We found that very odd and tried to make him change his mind.”

A man has been showing off his gigantic rabbit named Herman.

The mighty bunny weighs a massive 7.7kg, and his ears are a lengthy 21cm - almost as long as most pet rabbits are tall. And he is almost 1m tall.

The German Giant is even big for his breed, which usually tip the scales at around 6kg.

Herman lives in a specially built solid oak hutch and chomps his way through just over 2kg of food a day. His owner says his favourite snack is lettuce.

The giant bunny, who lives in Berlin with owner Hans Wagner, also takes a vitamin supplement to keep him healthy, and munches through a bale of hay a week.

Monopoly City Streets, which launches Wednesday, allows users to compete in a live, worldwide version of the popular game, creating the biggest Monopoly tournament ever played.

It’s an ambitious venture that we’ll confess to being fairly excited about: players will literally be able to buy any street in the world, and compete with every other player on the “board”. You start with 3 million Monopoly dollars, and can build not only hotels and houses but also football stadiums, castles and skyscrapers, reports the UK’s Guardian. Downing Street in the UK will cost $231,000, while Pennsylvania Avenue will cost $2 million.

The preview site reads:

A giant rat of a species previously unknown-to-science has been captured on an extinct volcano in Papua New Guinea.

Found by a tracker from a local tribe, the Bosavi Wooly Rat is 82 cm from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail and it weighs in at a 1.5 kilos. And of course it has a lot of fur, hence ‘wooly’ (pictured right).

“I had a cat and it was about the same size of this rat,” says wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan (press release). “This rat was incredibly tame. It just sat next to me nibbling on a piece of leaf.”

The question I really want answered is who would win in a face-off between the new giant rat and the recently discovered rat eating plant.

Buchanan was part of a BBC team filming on Mount Bosavi for TV programme ‘Lost Land of the Volcano’. The team have found around 40 possible new species in addition to the rat, including a subspecies of the strange marsupial cuscuses.

Following the descriptive naming technique, the silky-furred animal has been named the Bosavi Silky Cuscus (pictured left).

“Long ago, it was isolated on this volcano and has become something unique to Bosavi,” says Kristofer Helgen, a biologist at the Smithsonian. “I travel the world looking for mammals in many different places, but to find something of this size for the first time is a cause for major celebration.”

The team also found a new camouflaged gecko and a fanged frog, doubtless to be named the Bosavi Camouflaged Gecko and the Fanged Frog of Bosavi.

Of course, the animals’ unique habitat is already under threat for logging. Just once it would be nice not to have to write that on the end of one of these stories.

Exciting rumor: iPhone 3G S may finally get MMS next week

The iPhone 3G S launched a few months ago, but AT&T users haven’t been able to take advantage of a few much vaunted (and much needed) features as yet: MMS, Bluetooth file-sharing, and tethering are the Big Three. This, of course, despite the fact that AT&T is the “flagship” carrier! But never mind all that, because today we have some good news in the way of this latest bit of gossip: starting with iPhone OS 3.1, AT&T users will, in fact, be able to use MMS and Bluetooth file-sharing. Welcome to 2006, iPhone owners!

I kid, of course, but it is ludicrous that we’re getting so excited over a feature that’s been around for many years now. But I guess that’s what makes the iPhone so great, all that bleeding edge technology.

The key is Apple’s event next week, on September 9. (A few people from the Crunch Team will be there.) That’s when it’s expected that Apple will announce these new features—if not at the very event, then sometime that week.

Keep in mind that that Apple event seems to be music-centric. Whether that means new iPods with built-in cameras, the Beatles coming to iTunes, social media functionality built into iTunes (“Jim played ‘Paint it Black’ 22 times today. He must be going through a phase.”), or whatever, who knows.

In other news, the New York Times is finally getting around to something that we have known for months: the iPhone is just killing AT&T. Anyone who was at SXSW last March knows first hand how all those iPhone-toting attendees brought AT&T to its knees. Basically, iTunes users, with their excessive data consumption, is pushing AT&Ts’ network to the breaking point; some might even call it broken. (Comedian Jim Norton often ranks about his terrible iPhone reception, on the West Side of New York City.)

So, yeah, three cheers for MMS, maybe.

Woman murdered “after changing her Facebook status from ‘Married’ to ‘Single’”

That little ‘Relationship Status’ entry on your Facebook profile can be a powerful thing.

People probably pay more attention to relationship status changes in their news feed than anything else on the site. It can be a fun bit of gossip seeing someone change how they define their relationship. Those changes can lead to trouble though, as this story illustrates.

Cardiff Crown Court in Wales is currently hearing the case of Brian Lewis, 31, who is accused of killing partner Hayley, 26, a heavy Facebook user. Although not married, the couple’s Facebook relationship status was ‘Married’.

The BBC reports:

Mark Evans, prosecuting, told the court… ”Hayley started to expand her social life and was spending a lot of time on internet sites, in particular Facebook.

“She was quite secretive about this, preventing Lewis from using the site and turning the computer off. It is quite clear this rankled with him.

“On 2 March, she changed her Facebook relationship status from married to single and she made it clear their relationship was over.”

The court heard that fraught with worry over this, Mr Lewis stabbed Hayley while she slept before fleeing the scene. The trial continues. It’s an extreme case, but one that shows just how much of an effect online social networking has had on society in a short space of time.

On an interesting side note, Facebook recently removed the ability to search users by relationship status, making Facebook-based dating more difficult.

Windows Mobile Phones Get Love From AT&T — Free Wi-Fi

First it was the iPhone, then the BlackBerry, and now finally Windows Mobile will get free Wi-Fi access from AT&T. The carrier has 20,000 hotspots, and on September 14 customers with a qualifying plan will be able to use their Windows Mobile phone (with Wi-Fi) at any of the locations for free.

WM6.5 is expected in October so new phones should be able to get free Wi-Fi; AT&T states that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be supported with this plan going forward. While all AT&T Windows Mobile 6.5 phones going forward will be supported with free Wi-Fi, the first three supported Samsung handsets all run on Windows Mobile 6.1. That might leave the door open for some older Windows Mobile handsets, but there is no word if older versions of WinMo on other handsets will be supported.

YouTube’s Movie Rental Plans

Google may have “found the best way to monetize YouTube yet,” said Ross Miller in Engadget. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is in late-stage talks to enter the movies-on-demand business, with Lionsgate, Sony, and Warner Bros. on deck to stream their feature films through YouTube for a $3.99 rental fee. That would put YouTube in “a pretty competitive spot versus the likes of Netflix, Amazon VOD, and Apple’s iTunes movie store.”

YouTube had better hope its “attempt to woo Hollywood studios will go better this time,” said Ronald Grover and Robert Hof in BusinessWeek. But if Google and the studios can iron out their differences over pirated content on YouTube, this could be a win for both sides—YouTube, the most popular video site, might finally make some money, and the studios could counter slumping DVD sales.

Yes, it’s “a fine idea,” said Douglas McIntyre in 24/7 Wall Street. Too bad the online movie-rental “market may already be taken.” YouTube will not only be up against Apple, Amazon, and Netfilx, but also the big cable companies. Google needs to do something to raise revenue, though—despite YouTube's massive audience, it lost an estimated $300 million last year.

Did you hear that? That’s the sound of Windows Mobile fans around the world breathing a simultaneous sigh of relief upon learning that Windows Mobile 6.5-powered handsets, or “Windows Phones”, will finally become available beginning October 6th. Official word just came down from Redmond and we couldn’t be happier to see 6.5 finally preparing to become a reality. As per the announcement, here is an official list of carriers and manufacturers around the globe that are already on board:

We still have good vibes from the first photos of the new Ferrari 458 Italia, which were released a month ago. So we're happy to get more photos of the new Ferrari in advance of its rollout in Frankfurt next month.

This new batch of photos gives us a first look at the 458 Italia's interior. Ferrari says the design of the steering wheel and gauge cluster is a step forward in ergonomics.

There are no stalks on the steering column of the 458 Italia. Most of the controls are on the steering wheel or grouped into pods that flank the wheel. The design takes its cues from Ferrari's Formula One cars.

Controls on the steering wheel are the turn signals, wipers, suspension setting and engine start. Transmission shift paddles and audio controls are mounted on the back side of the wheel.

The pod to the right of the wheel has controls for the navigation unit, rear parking camera and infotainment unit. The pod to the left of the wheel has controls for cruise control, the on-board computer and for changing the look of the left display screen in the gauge cluster.

BMW has finally decided to take the covers of their Vision EfficientDynamics Concept vehicle ahead of its scheduled debut at the Frankfurth Motor Show. BMW says that the high-performance concept study, with their ActiveHybrid technology, showcases “future demands in sustained mobility” and is “a symbol for the future of Sheer Driving Pleasure in harmony with trend-setting efﬁciency.” The automaker says that the aim of the Vision EfficientDynamics, is to realize “the performance of a BMW M Car and a highly emotional character combined with the fuel economy and emission management of a modern small car in the premium class.”

he power delivered by the two electric motors and single diesel 3-cylinder engine gives the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept a level of performance superior to anything provided so far by a hybrid vehicle. "Scream 4" in the Works

Scream creator Kevin Williamson stated that the script for Scream 4 is in the works, but not just one, he is working on a whole new Scream trilogy. Williams stated, "I created three different chapters, broke it up and I got really excited." Executive producer Bob Weinstein has yet to sign on but chances are he will.

The plan is to have Scream 4 start up 10 years from the point Scream 3 left off. Courtney and David Arquette are on deck for the projects, but Neve Campbell and Jamie Kennedy will not be joining them.

Megan Fox NOT Catwoman in new Batman Flick

Megan Fox will not be starring in the next Batman movie. There is no script yet, according to PCM's sources.

Reports surfaced earlier this week, including PCM, claiming the screen hottie was set to play Catwoman in the sequel to last year’s blockbuster ‘The Dark Knight’, directed by Christopher Nolan.

Although Warner Brothers has confirmed there will be a third film in the current movie series based on the DC comic book created by Bob Kane in 1939, they are made it very clear that no casting decisions have been made. A representative for the studio said: "It's a rumour. It's not true. There is no script. There is no project to be cast in."

Although bosses are denying Megan is set to take the role of the feline fatale – played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry is previous big screen outings – it is believed Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne, while Sir Michael Caine will return as his loyal butler Alfred. Other stars linked to the unscripted, unplotted project include Johnny Depp, who was rumoured to be portraying The Joker, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was said to be line to play The Penguin.

A Connecticut pet shop worker found the nosey bunny in a delivery of 6-week-old dwarf rabbits that arrived at the Milford store last week. Both noses have two nostrils.

The owner of the Purr-Fect Pets shop says he’s never seen anything like it in 25 years in the business. He says the bunny eats, drinks and hops around like the rest of the litter.

Thank the Lord! Microsoft just confirmed that Xbox 360 price drop we’ve been bleating about for entirely too many days now. Yes, the Xbox 360 Elite goes down by $100 to $299; the Pro goes from $299 to $249 while supplies last (which means it’s being phased out entirely); and the Arcade stays at $199.

What does this mean? For one, all those damn rumors were right on the money. The “craziest” rumor, that the Pro would be getting the axe, panned out 100 percent.

Nowhere does Microsoft mention the lack of HDMI cable in the Elite now, nor does it mention the actual hard drive size each system will now have.

But that last complaint is irrelevant right now: go forth and celebrate the price cut!

Review: 'Arkham Asylum' features Batman at his best

The glaring weakness with earlier video game adaptations of the Dark Knight was the overemphasis on Batman the brawler.

Developer Rocksteady Studios opted to focus instead on every facet of the Caped Crusader's persona with action game Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is why it's the best depiction of the superhero in this medium.

Batman isn't just a great fighter. He's a clever detective, a lover of high-tech gadgets and a tortured soul still bearing the burden of his parents' murders as a child. Arkham Asylum portrays all of these sides of Batman to great effect.

The game starts inside the Batmobile, with Batman transporting nemesis The Joker to the famous psychiatric hospital. However, Joker's detainment is part of a broad plan to unite Gotham City's most dangerous criminals at the facility for a hostile takeover, forcing Batman to enter Arkham and restore order.

Players enter an asylum steeped in darkness and despair. Inmates run amok, beating down guards and tearing the gritty facility apart. Other detainees scream or babble as they run around the grounds in a fog. As Batman ventures deeper into Arkham, the journey takes a physical toll in the form of a tattered costume or bruises and cuts to his face.

The tension is further enchanced by powerful voice acting, courtesy of Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (Joker), best known for their work in the cartoon Batman: The Animated Series.

Environments in Arkham contain plenty of places to crawl into (vents), climb up to (gargoyles) or grapple onto (building ledges, guardrails). They also double as excellent hiding places. Batman uses a wide variety of gadgets to assist him in combat and exploration, such as Batarangs, explosive gel and the Batclaw.

Batman chains together punches and kicks against enemies using the game's simple FreeFlow combat system. One button delivers simple strikes, while a second executes counters, signalled by lightning bolts flashing above an enemy's head.

Players can get by just jamming the attack and counter buttons furiously, but the fights don't appear as dynamic unless moves are properly linked. As strikes are tallied, Batman's range of attacks broadens to include moves such as tossing foes into a crowd or flipping them over and breaking their arm. The goal is making Batman's movement look almost effortless.

But the real exhiliarating combat experiences occur from the shadows. Batman will sometimes enter giant rooms guarded by armed inmates. A few gunshots takes him down immediately, which means he must act covertly. This is where the Dark Knight's penchant for slowly and systematically defeating enemies kicks in.

One encounter at the halfway point of the game is a great example of how rewarding and diverse stealth combat can be. Batman enters a multi-floor area with the goal of shutting down a water pump through a control room in the back.

Before the battle begins, Batman enters Detective Mode, a mechanic allowing him to spot hidden clues or out-of-view foes. He can even read enemies' heart rates to determine whether they're calm or nervous. In this case, he learns there are seven armed enemies.

The first foe is dispatched by Inverted Takedown, a move where Batman hangs upside down, pulls up an enemy and hangs him from a gargoyle by his feet. When three henchmen run to help, Batman glides to a nearby vent and sneaks in.

Batman spots a weak ceiling and sprays it with explosive gel. To distract the guards again, he blows out a nearby wall, then darts into a vent shaft toward the control room.

Two inmates investigate the ruined wall, while two more head to a lower level, right under that weak ceiling. Now underneath the elevated control room, Batman drops the ceiling on their heads, then takes out two more foes by ripping out the control room floor with the Batclaw. Batman flies toward a nearby gargoyle and glides back down to the final two enemies to finish them off. This experience represents what makes Arkham Asylum appealing: the variety with which players can clear a room.

Detective Mode is not only effective in battle. Batman often uses the feature to seek clues or track down persons of interest. For example, he can see trails of fingerprints on walls or traces of cigarette smoke in the air.

Most of the interactions with Batman's signature villains, including Bane, Killer Croc and Poison Ivy, are handled wonderfully. Most memorable were the encounters with Scarecrow, which provided some of the game's more disturbing and fascinating scenarios.

Once the 10-12 hour campaign is complete, players can move on to Challenge Rooms, a series of stealth and combat tests. Some require Batman to wipe out a room of foes for the highest score, while others push Batman to clear a room of armed gunmen as quickly as possible. Times and scores are then posted to online leaderboards. PlayStation 3 owners get the bonus incentive of competing in these challenges as either Batman or The Joker.

Arkham Asylum is a must-play for Batman fans, but it also presents a highly satisfying option for action game aficionados, between the platforming, elegant combat and effective use of stealth play.

The system wasn't the only thing that got smaller when Sony officially unveiled the slimmer PS3. The entire PlayStation branding has been reworked: the system is no longer PLAYSTATION 3 (all caps), it's PlayStation 3. The logo no longer uses the Spider-Man font to spell out the entire system name. Instead, marketing materials now feature three simple characters: "PS3."

Kaz Hirai explained the meaning behind the change to Times Online. The new logo represents a "reset" of sorts. Hirai explains that he wanted it to represent "going back to our roots."

There are practical applications to a revised logo, as well. "When you have PlayStation 3 spelt out, the aspect ratio was such that if you wanted it on a billboard it became tiny. It didn't work in terms of visibility," he admitted. We took a look back to this Call of Duty 4 TV ad to emphasize the difference: the Xbox 360 logo is more than twice as large as the now-outdated PLAYSTATION 3 logo. If you watched this ad on a SDTV, you probably wouldn't even notice the PS3 logo at all! While we're not entirely sure the new logo will have an effect on sales, we (and other games bloggers) are glad to finally give our CAPS LOCK keys a break. Thanks, Sony.

Bioshock Movie May Have A New Director

The last time we reported on the video game adaptation, Bioshock, the movie was put on hold because of (you guessed it) money troubles. Universal Pictures took a look at the $160 million dollar budget, and decided to pull the plug in the pre-production stages, letting staff go (for that time being) until they and the then-director Gore Verbinski could figure out a way to do the movie (basically) without it costing as much.

And it looks like they’ve done just that, as well as finding a replacement director for Verbinski in the form of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who you’ll probably know best for co-writing and directing 28 Weeks Later. He is in talks to direct from a script written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai).

So how have Universal and Verbinski revamped their budget plan to make Bioshock for less? Well, they’re going to film outside the U.S. in order to take advantage of the tax credits and favorable exchange rates. The reason Universal went after another director (who’s in talks to helm - i.e. not officially signed on yet) is that Verbinski can’t commit to the overseas shoot, since he’s directing the animated film Rango, with his Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp.

This is kind of surprising news, and something that’s bound to be disappointing news for Verbinski, who a few months ago turned down directing Pirates 4 in order to focus on Bioshock. Now it appears he’ll just be producing, which is still a big commitment, but definitely not the one he had in mind originally.

When pre-production was halted on Bioshock in late-April this year, the studio vowed that it wouldn’t turn into another on-off-on-off Halo situation; with them in negotiations with a new director, as well as trying to come up with a revised budget, it certainly shows they’re determined to get it made. As stated, Fresnadillo still isn’t officially signed onto direct Bioshock - Bioshock developers, Take-Two Games, must give him the thumbs up, since they have “director approval” rights. Fresnadillo’s producing partner, Enrique Lopez Lavigne, is also in talks to produce the movie.

I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who are glad to see Verbinski not being the one to bring Bioshock to cinematic life. I’m not one of those people - as much of a mess as the Pirates sequels were, I actually think he has exhibited real talent as a filmmaker with the American remake of The Ring and the interesting dramedy The Weather Man, to name a couple.

However, I also like Fresnadillo. Not only did he breath some frantic, frenzied life into 28 Weeks Later, but he directed a wicked little 2001 thriller/drama called Intacto that you should really check out if you get the chance. Fresnadillo would do a great job bringing Bioshock to the big-screen.

Having said that, it’s not hard to notice the studio switching from an established big-budget filmmaker like Verbinski (who delivered three mammoth, money-making hits with Pirates of the Caribbean), to a much less experienced Fresnadillo, who has only really had one semi-hit (in the U.S. market) with 28 Weeks Later. I’m not slamming Fresnadillo - he’s clearly a talented director - but it seems a bit odd and surprising that Universal would go for someone with little-to-no-experience for this high-profile project.

Industry Analysts Weigh In On The Possibility Of A 360 Re-Design

Now that we all know about the PlayStation 3 Slim, industry analysts are weighing in on the possibility of Microsoft coming out with an Xbox 360 Slim, or the 360 Half-Pint Or the Xbox 180 or some other catchy name. Industry Gamers spoke to a variety of different experts who all gave their opinions on the possibility of a aesthetic or hardware re-design of the Xbox 360.

Opinions are split, but most analysts think some kind of re-design could come with the introduction of the 360's motion sensing Project Natal in 2010. Ben Schachter from Broadpoint AmTech put it succinctly:

"Yes, I think they will release a new look for the hardware in conjunction with the motion sensor next year."

On the other side of the spectrum, Michael Pachter, from Wedbush Morgan said:

"I don't think so. They had a redesign to eliminate the RROD issue, changed the heat sink, fan and a couple of other components. I'm not sure that they need to redesign the box, although I see the Elite black box becoming the standard."

The awesome thing about video game analysis is that anyone can do it. I'm going to go ahead and gaze into my crystal ball right now and predict that, yes, there will be a redesign of the Xbox 360's case and hardware to accompany the release of the Project Natal control system, but it will not be as drastic as the changes made for the PlayStation 3 Slim. I'm thinking maybe a racing stripe or some flames painted on the side of the box would do the trick.

I'm generally happy with my Xbox, now that I've gotten it repaired from its inevitable red-ring, but I would really like it if Microsoft would do something about the noise the 360 makes. Mine is about 5 times louder than either my PlayStation 3 or my Wii. Aesthetically, it looks fine. In my opinion, the 360 is a reasonable size and reasonably well-designed. It's almost non-designed: The beige color and soothing shape make it a very unobtrusive console that doesnt' call attention to itself. You hardly notice it until it's on. I like that in a game system. The only aesthetic changes I would like to see would be the return of the wood-grain style of the game systems of the 1970s. I want people to think I have a game system made out of a dead tree! What about you? How would you like to see the 360 changed?

Holy monk joins shadowy ranks of Diablo III

San Francisco (CA) - Blizzard Entertainment has introduced the 'holy' monk - a highly anticipated fourth playable class for Diablo III. Although the character is influenced by classic pen and paper RPG archetypes, the monk reportedly incorporates the development team's 'love' of arcade-style fighting games.

"While many of the monk's influences are from traditional light and fast melee, he is indeed a holy warrior. His use of holy magic flows through each of his skills, combining martial arts with divine justice," Blizzard explained in a statement.

"It's a class that prefers speed over toughness, but that doesn't mean he's incapable of handling the hordes of enemies that he'll be fighting. The skills and use of the combo system makes the monk a character that will be a bit more challenging to play than the other heroes in the game, but when played expertly can unleash truly devastating damage upon the demonic hordes facing him."

Indeed, monk skills that use the combo system can be "chained together" in various orders to achieve different results. For example, the first hit of exploding palm will deal some damage, the second causes a little more, while the third results in a bleeing "damage over time" (DoT).

Rhapsody tries music subscription iPhone app

Subscription music service Rhapsody, a division of Real Networks, has announced plans to port its service to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. In a blog post Sunday, the company said it will submit the application (demonstrated on the video below) this week to Apple for review.

Historically, Apple has steered clear of subscription music, making it impossible for services such as Napster or Rhapsody to work with the iPod, fearing competition with its own iTunes music service. But the success of iPhone music applications such as Pandora, Last.fm, and Slacker, may have opened the door for subscription services as well. (Last.fm is a part of CBS Interactive, which also publishes CNET News.)

Rhapsody's mobile app will require that users hold a Rhapsody-to-Go account, which currently runs $14.95 per month. (Non-subscribers will apparently be offered a limited time free-trial period.) The Rhapsody app allows subscribers to explore and stream Rhapsody's entire online music catalog over EDGE, 3G, or Wi-Fi, as well as create and store playlist queues of their favorite content. The app does not, however, allow users to download and store Rhapsody songs directly on the device, or cache content temporarily to hear offline.

If Rhapsody's application is approved by Apple, it won't likely be alone. Competing services such as Spotify have shown off similar applications, and Napster will surely want to get in on the action as well. The real question is whether people will find subscription music capabilities valuable. With free, ad-supported services such as Pandora already dominating the spotlight, it remains to be seen whether Rhapsody can convince new customers to spend close to $15 a month for unlimited on-demand music streaming.

In the blog post, Rhapsody also revealed plans to develop an Android application. It's not known whether that version would offer greater flexibility (local storage, over-the-air downloads) than the version for the iPhone.
